Asian economies are racing to negotiate favorable trade deals with the US as President Donald Trump threatens to impose reciprocal tariffs. Trump announced plans to introduce tariffs matching those levied on US goods by other countries, effective immediately. This move has raised concerns among Asian economies with significant trade surpluses with the US, including China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and India. Countries like Vietnam and India are particularly vulnerable, with tariffs potentially rising to 8% and 15%, respectively. Japan, however, may be shielded from higher tariffs due to its relatively low tariffs and recent agreements to import more US natural gas and deliver LNG through a pipeline from northern Alaska.
