Canada’s prime minister has strengthened his grip on power after winning key by-elections, building on earlier support from opposition defections. His Liberal Party now holds 174 seats in the 343-seat House of Commons, securing a full majority. The victories came in University–Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest in Ontario and Terrebonne in Quebec, reinforcing the party’s position after months of political shifts and close contests. Carney said affordability and the economy will remain top priorities, announcing a suspension of the federal fuel excise tax from April 20 to September 7. The move is expected to cut petrol prices by about 10 Canadian cents per liter and diesel by four cents. He said the measure will lower costs for truckers and businesses, while critics accused the government of seeking power without accountability.
