Denmark Calls Snap Election Amid Greenland's Ongoing Tension With the U.S.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced Thursday that Denmark will hold an early parliamentary election on March 24, asking voters to decide the country's direction amid ongoing tensions with the United States over Greenland. The last election was held in November 2022, resulting in a three-party coalition. Frederiksen, a centre-left Social Democrat leading since mid 2019, currently governs alongside the Liberal Party and the centrist Moderate Party. Voters will elect all 179 lawmakers of the Folketing, with 175 seats for Danish constituencies and 4 split between Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The snap election follows a tense standoff with President Trump, who threatened new tariffs on Denmark and other EU countries after demanding to acquire Greenland for national security reasons. Frederiksen said at the Munich Security Conference in February that she believes Washington still wants to annex Greenland.
