Germany's inflation rate rose to 2.1% in January 2026, up from 1.8% in December 2025, according to Destatis. The increase was largely driven by higher food prices, which rose by 2.1% compared to January 2025, and service prices, which jumped by 3.2%. Ruth Brand, President of Destatis, attributed the rise to increased food prices and service costs. Energy prices fell by 1.7% year-on-year, with household energy costs down 3.2%, Food prices rose by 2.1%, with notable increases in sugar, jam, honey, and confectionery (+10.9%), Service prices increased by 3.2%, led by social facilities (+7.1%) and passenger transport (+6.2%). Core inflation, excluding food and energy, stood at 2.5%.
