Tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalated on Tuesday after a U.S. Navy F-35C fighter jet shot down an Iranian Shahed-139 drone approaching the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea. U.S. Central Command said the drone “aggressively approached” the carrier with “unclear intent” and ignored de-escalation efforts. The Lincoln, sailing about 500 miles from Iran’s southern coast, was unharmed, and no U.S. equipment was damaged. The incidents come as a renewed strain after months of Iranian protests and President Donald Trump’s push for Tehran to negotiate on its nuclear program. Iran’s president signaled a willingness for “fair and equitable negotiations” with the U.S., while Trump said he prefers a deal but warned that “bad things would happen” if talks fail.
