Just two years after winning one of the largest parliamentary majorities in modern British history, Prime Minister Keir Starmer's grip on power is crumbling fast. His Labour Party suffered one of its worst-ever local election defeats last week, triggering four ministerial aide resignations and nearly 80 lawmakers publicly calling for him to go. Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood and Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper have both told Starmer to set out a departure timeline. One anonymous lawmaker said the true number wanting him gone could easily be double those who have gone public. Sterling fell 0.45% to $1.3550 on Tuesday, while 20- and 30-year government bond yields surged close to their highest levels since 1998, rising 9–10 basis points. Starmer has refused to resign, warning a leadership contest would bring "chaos."
