Three more foreign vessels were struck in the Persian Gulf overnight near Iraq and the United Arab Emirates, authorities confirmed Thursday, intensifying an assault on global shipping that began after U.S. and Israeli airstrikes hit Iran on February 28. A container ship was struck by an unknown projectile 35 nautical miles north of Jebel Ali, near Dubai, sparking a small fire, with all crew safe. Two oil tankers were left ablaze near Iraq's port of Umm Qasr, killing at least one person and prompting the rescue of 38 crew members. Iran's newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, declared the strait must stay closed as a "tool to pressure the enemy" and demanded all U.S. military bases in the Middle East close immediately. Iran's military spokesperson warned oil could hit $200 a barrel.
