Private Payrolls Rose by 22,000 in January, ADP says

U.S. private hiring remained weak in January, with private employers adding just 22,000 jobs, according to ADP National Employment Report. Annual pay increased 4.5% following a long slowdown that saw 398,000 jobs added in 2025, down from 771,000 in 2024. Education and health services led the gains with 74,000 jobs, while manufacturing lost 8,000 and professional and business services shed 57,000. Goods-producing jobs rose by 1,000, and service-providing jobs increased 21,000. Regionally, the Midwest gained 25,000 jobs, the Northeast added 17,000, while the South lost 10,000 and the West fell by 11,000. Medium sized firms added 41,000 jobs, large firms cut 18,000, and small firms added no job. Pay for job-stayers rose 4.5%, while job-changers saw 6.4% growth. December’s total was revised down to 37,000.
