President Trump made his clearest public case yet for possible military action against Iran About 90 minutes into his nearly two hour State of the Union address Tuesday. He accused Tehran of restarting its nuclear program, developing missiles that could soon reach the United States, supporting militant groups, and killing 32,000 protesters during recent anti-government demonstrations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio briefed Congress' "Gang of Eight" on Iran hours before the speech. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer warned against secret military operations. Trump said he prefers diplomacy but will "never hesitate to confront threats." A poll from January found 69% of Americans believe the military should only be used when facing a direct and imminent threat.
