U.S. Housing Construction Ends 2025 on a High Note

U.S. Building permits in December 2025 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,448,000, rising 4.3% from November’s revised 1,388,000 but standing 2.2% below December 2024. Single-family permits fell 1.7% to 881,000, while buildings with five or more units reached 515,000. The U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development noted that the December 2025 residential construction data also included initial November estimates and updates showing month-to-month changes from October. Housing climbed to 1,404,000, up 6.2% from November but down 7.3% year-on-year. Single-family rose 4.1% to 981,000. Completions reached 1,525,000, up 2.3% monthly but slightly below a year earlier. For 2025, permits totaled 1,425,200, starts 1,358,700, and completions 1,497,800.
