The Canadian Prime Minister said on Thursday that he expects the U.S. administration to respect Canada’s sovereignty, following reports that U.S. officials met with the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP), a group advocating for a referendum on Alberta’s independence. The Financial Times reported three meetings between State Department officials and the APP, which claims Ottawa’s policies limit the province’s economic potential and plans to request a $500 billion credit facility. Carney noted that President Donald Trump has never raised Alberta separatism with him, stressing that he communicates clearly on preserving national sovereignty. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith insists she wants to remain part of Canada, despite polls showing 30% of residents frustrated with Ottawa. Smith’s push for a Pacific Coast oil pipeline faces opposition from British Columbia’s Premier David Eby, who called seeking foreign assistance to split Canada “treason.”
