Im glad you said "trading" and not investing; my answer is yes you need technical analysis when trading stock cfds. When investing (buying and holding) in real stocks you dont need technical analysis but when trading stock derivatives you need technical analysis.

However, you also need some fundamental analysis to back you up when trading stocks. For example earnings calendar is an important tool that brokers provide to help you know when companies will release their quarterly profitability report.

Dividend calendar is also impoetant to let you know when dividends will be paid because everytie dividende are paid you qualify for them if you hold a buy position on a stock CFD. After dividends are paid, the price of the stock also falls which can lead to losses so you need to be aware of dividend payment dates.

Most retail traders in the world are technical traders, not fundamental or macro traders. Almost everyone is a 'chart expert'.

So, yes, it is so common for traders to use technical analysis & chart patterns when trading individual stocks.
