The Truth About Profit

Hi everyone,

I’ve been trading live forex accounts for a while now, and like many traders, I started out with clear expectations—aiming for consistent monthly returns like 5%, 10%, and beyond.

But experience in the live market has reshaped that perspective. Profitability isn’t as straightforward as hitting fixed targets. It’s more complex and far more disciplined than it first appears.

Over time, I’ve learned that true profitability is less about chasing percentages and more about managing risk, preserving capital, and staying consistent enough to keep learning and improving. It’s about grounding your expectations in reality, not in hope.

I’d really appreciate insights from traders with solid experience—especially scalpers:

When you first started, what were your expectations for daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly returns?

Now that you’ve had at least a year of live trading, what kind of returns are you actually achieving?

If you’ve reached consistency, how does your average monthly return compare to your drawdown?

In your opinion, do most retail traders overestimate what’s realistically achievable? If so, why do you think that is?
