The story about the The Turtle Traders
The experiment was a famous 1983 financial experiment conducted by legendary commodities traders Richard Dennis and William Eckhardt. The experiment tested a core debate: Is successful trading an innate gift, or can it be taught through mechanical rules?
What i learnt from this story is that Discipline Trumps Intelligence. Everyone who participated in this experiment were given the exact same strategy, rules, and funding. Yet, their results varied drastically. The difference between the top performers and those who struggled wasn't smarts—it was the emotional discipline to follow the system mechanically, especially during painful losing streaks. Not a Gift. Richard Dennis proved that trading mastery isn't an innate, mystical talent reserved for a chosen few. High-level execution in complex environments can be broken down into clear, repeatable rules and taught to anyone willing to adhere to them.
