How did the markets react to 9/11 terror attacks?

When the event happened the stock market was not yet open because stock exchanges in the USA open by 9 30 am, and the first plane hit before then. However, the S&P 500 Futures market was open because Futures markets open on Sunday evening.

This is the sequence of events on the S&P 500 Futures chart

1. First plane hits the tower

2. CNN reports the news

3. FOX news & CBS news report the incident, President Bush is briefed

4. Second plane crashes into the tower

Its surprising how investors didn't initially realize what was going on and some even kept buying SP500 even after CNN announced it

Second plane hit by 9:36 am according to this CNN report and I think the stock exchanges in America had just opened for the day

This was the final straw that broker the Camel's back ( I mean the second plane hit) after that it was a massive sell-off of SP500

Initially people thought it was just a small private plane that crashed into the WTC that's why there was no immediate reaction

Sure the Chicago Mercantile Exchange closed immediately and the NYSE had not yet opened for the day for some reason, so they didn't even open at all that day. I have heard accounts of some traders in London saying they were asked to go home by their trading managers.
