what is quant trading, how do i start a career in it?
Quant trading is using mathematical/statistical models to create software then using this software for trading financial markets. Most quant traders I know have degrees in mathematics/statistics, software coding and that sort of thing.
Examples of Quant firms are Citadel LLC, Tudor Investments, Jane Street etc. As an individual I don't think you can start quant trading on your own, you need to work with a quant firm like the ones i mentioned above.
Quant Researcher:
You could work as a quant researcher where you use mathematics to come up with formulas that can predict the probability of the markets moving in a certain direction.
Quant Developer:
As a developer in a quant trading firm, you would be the one to turn the mathematical model given to you by the researcher, into a software program.
Quant Trader:
As a quant trader you will be responsible for executing trades using the quant software built by the developer.
Quantitative (Quant) trading is an industry where these firms pay techies to build proprietary trading software targeted at specific markets such as oil, fx, crypto etc. then they employ traders to trade with this software.
I have heard that junior traders earn a quant trading salary around $400k per annum and the bonuses are even higher. Some quant firms let traders keep 20% of any profits they generate.
To get a quant trading job, you have to be good in math, computer science, coding etc. plus having experience in building software for other industries could be an added advantage.
A friend of mine was able to get into one of the quant firms in Chicago (as a junior trader) because he accepted to work the midnight shift when European markets would be open.
Some of you may have heard about Kairan Quazi the 16-year-old who just moved from Space-X to a quant firm called Citadel Securities. read more here https://africa.businessinsider.com/news/he-joined-spacex-at-14-at-16-teen-prodigy-kairan-quazi-is-jumping-to-quant-trading/zxbzn7c
