OIL PRICES FALL ON HORMUZ DEAL HOPES, U.S. PIVOTS TO ECONOMIC PRESSURE ON IRAN

Oil prices extended declines on Wednesday, amid easing concerns about military conflict in the Gulf and traders mulled prospects for an Iran-Oman deal to secure a safe transit route through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran said it had restarted talks with neighbor Oman to manage the Strait of Hormuz as it faces heightened economic pressure from U.S. ‌President Donald Trump in the wider conflict.

Iran and Oman have been in on-and-off talks for weeks about controlling traffic through the strategic waterway, which handled one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments before the war began in February.

● Iraq could serve as an example of how the United States could carry out its threat to force countries that continue trading with Iran out of the dollar-based financial system.

Washington has already sanctioned a host of Iraqi banks accused of doing business with Tehran, though it has avoided measures that would devastate the economy of the strategic ally of both countries.

● Six months into the U.S.-Iran war, Qatar is among the conflict's biggest economic casualties, with its liquefied natural gas exports slashed by 96%, data shows.

Saudi ⁠Arabia, the UAE, Iraq and Kuwait have seen their oil exports hit, but by nowhere near as much.

US-CANADA TRADE WAR ESCALATES

The Trump administration is considering new trade measures after Canada announced dollar-for-dollar retaliation against fresh US tariffs.

Canada will impose 50% duties on $20 billion of US goods, including steel, aluminum, electronics and clothing, starting Sept. 8.

Trump has threatened further escalation, including 50% auto tariffs.

The dispute could hit key US states and create political risks for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections.
