It depends on your risk appetite. EUR/USD is good for beginners because its price does not move too agressively which can cause huge losses in the blink of an eye.

XAU/USD is better for experienced traders because they can make more profit from the fast peice movement while still managing risk effectively.

Both EUR/USD and XAU/USD are affected by news releases like NFP, CPI etc. but XAU/USD (aka Gold) is the more dangerous of the two so in my view, beginners should stick to EUR/USD.

i go for xauusd any time bro, although the spreads are higher than what you get at eur/usd, it gives me more bang for my buck and the leverage is the same at most brokers. If you trust your strategy, then why not risk it.

But remember xauusd is not for untested strategies cos it very volatile make sure you have a trusted and tested strategy then go for it.

After you have traded any instrument for a while, you know the answer.

a. Are you comfortable mentally & emotionally trading that instrument?
b. Do you understand how it moves, and have an edge to trade it.

I know traders who are really good at trading DAX. But I don't trade it at all, because It does not fit with my trading. You have to trade what fits you.
