surprise rate cut usually weakens the dollar lower yields mean less reason to hold it, so money drifts elsewhere.

But the exception matters: if the cut looks panicky (like the Fed sees trouble coming), the dollar can actually jump instead, as people flee to safety.

So really it comes down to why the cut happened, not just that it happened. And since it's a surprise, expect sharper, messier moves than a cut everyone saw coming.
