when does London session open in Nigeria, is it by 8 am or 9 am?
Hi members, I usually get confused about when the London forex trading session actually opens in Nigerian time. I watched some YouTube videos, and some people say 8 am, some say 9 am and some even say 10 am. With so many conflicting times, when is the real time the London session starts in Nigeria?
From the end of March till the end of October every year, the London session opens by 8 am in the morning. But from November till middle of March the London session opens by 7 am Nigerian time.
The reason for the discrepancy in London session opening time in Nigeria is due to something called daylight savings.
During daylight savings the London government order that their clocks, be adjusted forward by one hour; making London time to be the same as Nigerian time.
But when daylight savings is over, the London government orders the clocks to be reversed back by one hour, and so Nigeria will then be ahead of London by 1-hour. The implication is that the London forex session that used to start by 8 am in Nigeria during daylight savings, will then start by 7 am after daylight savings ends and London clocks are reversed.
It's a bit confusing to grasp but I hope this helps.
It starts by 8 am in the morning but towards the end of the year (November/December) it changes to 7 am and remains that way till march.
The first & last hours of the London session are the most important:
The first hour of the London session (between 8 and 9 am) is very important so take note of it. Also take note of the 4pm closing price of the London session so you use it in your top-down analysis for the next day's trading. Cheers
In Nigeria, the London session opens from 8 am in the morning and it ends at 4 pm in the afternoon.
Daylight Savings Time (DST) ended yesterday 26th October so from today, the London forex session in Nigeria starts by 7 AM.

@Kemi, youre too early. DST starts on the last Sunday of March and ends on the last Sunday of October. So, London session will still starts 8 AM till after the last Sunday of October before it reverts to 7 AM

@kemi sorry I made a mistake which I am just seeing now. During DST, London session in Nigeria opens by 8 AM but after DST London session will open at 9 AM in Nigeria. And like I said, DST starts on the last Sunday of March and ends on the last Sunday of October so currently at the time of writing this, DST is over and London session strts 9 AM.
The London session always starts by 8 am for those living in London but for those in Nigeria you have to convert London time into Nigerian time. Currently daylight savings is over so 8 am in London is 9 am in Nigeria (1 hour difference). To mark out the London session on your TradingView chart, you must set the timezone to that of London. Currenctly daylight savings is over so London is in UTC timezone. So go to your TradingView, and set UTC as your timezone. Proceed to draw a box from 8: 00 to 16:00 (meaning 8 am to 4 pm) and that box will show the boundaries for the London session.
But from March ending this year (till november first week), daylight savings would have begun so the London timezone will change to UTC+1 so on your TradingView chart, you must also change your timezone to UTC+1. When daylight savings starts, the London & Nigerian time will be the same so 8 am in London will also be 8 am in Nigeria meaning the London session will start from 8 am during daylight savings.

For those people who trade stocks and even some major fx pairs, The London session closing time of 4 pm is very important, especially during the end of the month. It is called the London 4 pm FIX and by the close of the 4 pm hour, a fixed price is agreed on to be used by portdolio managers for rebalancing their portfolios. At the end of the month, you may notice that price moves towards the fix and on the first day of the new month, price moves away from the fix.
I think DST starts second sunday in March and ends on the first sunday in November. I dont think there is any October in daylight savings
